This house is located in Mount Vernon , an iconic 2.5 story Georgian estate that is home to George Washington, Commander in Chief of Revolutionary forces and first president of the US. Overlooking the Potomac River, this historic property is where Washington retired after his presidency and dedicated his time to enhancing the estate’s landscaping and managing repairs.

Washington spent over 430 days at Mount Vernon during his presidency and continued to care for the property until his death in 1799. The grounds also house the tombs of George and Martha Washington. Despite efforts to maintain the estate, it passed through several descendants before being offered for sale in 1848. This beautifully historic home is a rare glimpse into early American history and Washington’s lasting legacy.

In 1860, the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association of the Union, under the leadership of Ann Pamela Cunningham, acquired the mansion and a portion of the land for $200,000, rescuing it from a state of disrepair and neglect. The estate served as neutral ground for both sides during the American Civil War, although fighting raged across the nearby countryside. Mount Vernon was designated a National Historic Landmark on December 19, 1960 and later administratively listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
